Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable Bowel Syndrome(IBS) is a set of symptoms that causes digestive sensitivity and irritability. Symptoms include gas, bloating, pain, constipation, diarrhea and indigestion. Food intolerances, such as gluten, lactose and fructose are often present. Although stress and anxiety does not directly cause IBS it can significantly exacerbate symptoms.

What we look at when treating IBS.
  1. Colon microbiome
A healthy microbiome is essential for proper gut and immune function. When bacteria becomes unbalanced, the chemistry of the intestine changes and digestive issues, including IBS, can begin. The use of antibiotics and other medications, especially long term, can deplete the microbiome leaving the colon susceptible to dysbiosis and parasitic infection.
  2. Irregularity
Constipation and diarrhea are common symptom of IBS. Less that one complete bowel movement every 24-36 hours indicates constipation. This may alternate with periods of painful diarrhea.
  3. Digestive enzymes
Low stomach acid and digestive enzymes can cause the symptoms of IBS – bloating, gas, indigestion and pain. Over eating, inadequate chewing of food, drinking large amounts of liquids with meals has the effect of diluting stomach acid and enzymes.
  4. Diet
Diet is extremely important when treating IBS. In many cases food intolerances trigger IBS symptoms. The 3 main food groups that cause digestive irritability are gluten, lactose and fructose. Avoiding these foods and following a clean eating program will reduce the severity of symptoms.
